I DIDN’T KNOW IF GOING down to the community college was a good idea or not, but if Mom was determined to do it, then I would rather go with her to keep her out of trouble. Or maybe it was just so that I would be there if she did find out some information. I was just that nosy.

We stepped into the admissions office, and the first thing I noticed was a picture of Adam on the front counter. There were some flowers in vases around it, and we went to go check it out.

“Oh goodness,” I said louder than was necessary. “This is that professor who was murdered the other day. I can’t imagine who would do something like that.”

“It’s so sad,” Stormy agreed.

“Whoever murdered him should be run out of town on a rail,” Mom added.

I looked at her, my brow furrowed. “I think they might deserve more than that.”

She nodded. “What I meant to say was that they should get the death penalty.”

I shook my head at my mother and glanced around at the other people in the office. Most were ignoring us, except for an older balding man with glasses. He stood nearby, paper in hand, watching us as we talked.

I smiled at him. “Did you know Adam Shannon?” I asked him.

He nodded. “Of course I did. I work here. There’s no way for me not to know him.”

“Oh. Of course, what was I thinking?” I chuckled. “It sure was a terrible shame that someone killed him. I can’t imagine what goes through people’s minds when they commit murder.”

He sighed. “Yeah, it was pretty awful. Must have been an awful night for him.” The way he said it sounded almost flippant, and it made me wonder about him.

“Were you friends with Adam?” Stormy asked.

He chuckled. “Friends? No. I wouldn’t be friends with somebody like him. I take it that you ladies knew him?”

“Why do you say it like that? You wouldn’t be friends with him?” Mom asked, ignoring his question.

He shot us an annoyed look. “What difference is it to you?”

I shook my head. “Nothing. We just feel sorry for him.”

He came over to lean on the front counter. “Honestly, Adam was a troublemaker, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he found trouble that night. The kind that he couldn’t talk his way out of. He was always in the middle of something.”

“A troublemaker? Not Adam. I couldn’t see him being a troublemaker,” Mom said. “Why do you say that?”

He looked Mom up and down. “You think you know Adam, do you? Well, you didn’t know him unless you spent a lot of time with him. I can tell you that much. Adam always tried to undermine everyone at this college. He couldn’t get along with anyone.”

“I don’t believe it,” Mom said defiantly. “I sensed that he was a kind person. In fact, I know he was.”

He rolled his eyes at that. “You sensed? Who was he to you?”

Mom hesitated. “A friend. A new friend, but a friend nonetheless.
